Alternative Fibromyalgia Medicine

Since fibromyalgia brings many uncomfortable symptoms that touch all areas of the body, it’s no surprise that treatment can be tricky. From pain and tenderness to stiffness and fatigue, you may find that there are simply too many simultaneous symptoms to treat, or perhaps you don’t know which one will pop up next.
Alternative Fibromyalgia Medicine
While there’s no firm evidence that alternative fibromyalgia medicine is effective enough to replace pain medication, a holistic approach may bring more physical and psychological relief to fibromyalgia sufferers. Certain alternative therapies are safer and will be more useful than others, so be sure to consult with your health care provider before you try any complementary therapies.

Diet, Exercise and Physical Therapies to Ease Symptoms

There are several lifestyle changes and healthy habits that can increase your strength and energy, and they may be able to combat pain and tenderness, too. Although no single method will work for every patient, some popular physical approaches to pain relief include:
  • Dietary supplements. Vitamin D, magnesium, and 5-Hydroxytryptophan are the favored supplements for fibromyalgia pain and are often safe and healthy for the body. However, since any supplement can have dangerous side effects when combined with other medication, be wary and work with a doctor who knows a lot about supplements for pain relief.
  • Massage. Massage techniques like manual lymph drainage therapy can be used to increase circulation, reduce stiffness and increase your pain threshold. However, even slight pressure can be excruciating when you suffer from fibromyalgia, so any hands-on therapy should be used only when you feel up to it.
  • Acupuncture. This traditional Eastern approach to clearing the energy pathways in the body may bring some pain relief. Although no results are guaranteed, there’s also a very low chance of adverse side effects with acupuncture.
  • Heat therapy.  A moist heating pad on sore points can soothe muscles by encouraging blood flow. Balneotherapy, also known as spa therapy, involves bathing in warm water and can have a similar effect on sore muscles and sleep quality.
  • Vibration therapy. A specialized machine sends vibrations throughout the whole body as a form of mild exercise for your muscles. Your muscles will contract and relax as they would during normal exercise but without the physical effects, which means less pain.

Psychological Therapy as Alternative Medicine for Fibromyalgia

Although they can take a bit more time and effort to see results, these mental techniques can bring lasting improvements and help you develop better control over your symptoms when they do manifest
  • Tai chi. Studies have shown that tai chi can have positive effects on sleep, pain, stiffness, and general quality of life. The gentle movement is both meditative and relaxing for the muscles, and it can be practiced as often as you like.
  • BiofeedbackThe ongoing pain of fibromyalgia can cause you to clench your muscles and store extra tension in your body, which can lead to even more pain. Biofeedback is a physiological exercise in pain control: with the help of a therapist or specialized equipment, you can learn how to interpret and change your body’s physiological response to pain.
  • Hypnosis. This technique can help you integrate positive thinking into your daily life, and may actually influence pain sensation in the brain. In any case, positive thoughts can keep your mood high, and bolster your energy and motivation, so you have nothing to lose.
The best alternative medicine for your fibromyalgia will depend on a variety of factors including medical history, current medications, and your personality. Speak openly and often with your team of healthcare professionals to ensure everyone is well-informed about your treatment plan, and you will have a better chance of finding a safe and effective complementary remedy.

The Value of traditional Chinese medicine

Traditional Chinese remedies such as massages, herbs and acupuncture have been some of the most successful exports of Chinese culture, becoming a billion dollar industry.

It is growing by leap and bounds – about 12 per cent a year – and is expected to reach US$88 billion (Bt2.8 trillion) by 2017. The biggest overseas customers are Japan, Hong Kong, the US and South Korea, which together account for over 70 per cent of the export market.

While Asians are still the biggest consumers, traditional Chinese medicine is attracting a growing following in the West. Treatments such as meditation and a holistic approach to maintaining health have entered the mainstream and are included in the arsenal for fighting a variety of conditions, from mental health problems to Alzheimer’s.
One sign of the growing acceptance of traditional Chinese medicine is the news in March that German pharmaceutical giant Bayer had agreed to buy privately-held Chinese traditional herbal medicine maker Dihon Pharmaceutical Group – a deal rumoured to be worth over $500 million. Bayer said its goals were to strengthen its life-sciences portfolio, grow its business in China and gain a foothold in the traditional Chinese medicine market.
This is a significant development, as international pharmas had been reluctant to invest in traditional medicine. Naturally there were good reasons for this, as there are marked differences in Eastern and Western medical systems.
While Western medicine is empirical and focused on treating specific diseases, Eastern systems, including Thai traditional medicine, are more inclined to look at the body as a connected whole and they often use a range of treatments and herbal concoctions
This can make it difficult to measure the efficacy of any particular treatment.
Another problem is regulation. While orthodox drug treatments have to pass rigorous testing  before being approved for human application, in the past herbs used in traditional medicine were often classified as foods rather than medicines and so avoided such rigorous testing. This is changing and in 2011 the EU introduced the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive, prohibiting the sale of unlicensed herbal medicinal products, with a two-year grace period to conform.
Despite such challenges, it is interesting to see some convergence in the two approaches. There is a trend in the West towards integrated medicine and life sciences that takes a much broader approach towards medicine than merely treating an isolated ailment. One example of this is the experimental use of bioinformatics, which attempts to employ advanced computer systems to gain an understanding of traditional Chinese medicine mechanisms.
Meanwhile Western medicine is increasingly being used alongside traditional medicine in China. Many hospitals in Asia including Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand offer traditional Chinese medicine, while the WHO has established collaborative centers for traditional medicine in the US, Asia, Europe and Africa.
With the rapid ageing of populations around the world and the increasing interest in healthy lifestyles, let’s hope these efforts to combine the best of the West and the East bear fruit so that more people can enjoy a healthy future.

Integrative Medicine for CANCER

“Cancer is a wake-up call, and the way you choose to answer it is very important,” says Susan Apollon, author of An Inside Job: A Psychologist Shares Healing Wisdom for Your Cancer Journey. Today, cancer patients have impressive options for their medical treatment, but Apollon advises you to consider an integrative approach when selecting your healing team. Yes, it is important to take advantage of all modern medicine has to offer, but it is equally vital to find healers who will listen to you, treat you as an individual, and help you choose a protocol that supports your body, mind, and spirit.

“We are lucky to live in a time when Eastern medicine is being honored and married with Western medicine,” asserts Apollon. “A holistic approach recognizes you as an energetic being and allows you to restore well-being in a variety of ways. My patients meet with their oncologists and surgeons for chemo, radiation, and surgeries, but they also incorporate acupuncture, Reiki, Therapeutic Touch, tai chi, qigong, yoga, nutrition programs, herbal supplements, and meditation and mindfulness into their healing routines. This allows them to care for their whole bodies and souls—and many have experienced physical healing as well as an improved quality of life.”
“Though nobody wants to receive a cancer diagnosis, your perspective moving forward will greatly impact the level of healing you achieve,” concludes Apollon. “Answering cancer with unconditional love for yourself and giving your whole self the energy, nourishment, and peace it requires will unburden your body and prepare you for greater healing.”

Diabetes & natural Medicine

From supplements to guided meditation, your diabetes treatment could include traditional medicines, alternative therapies, and natural remedies, too.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, part of the National Institutes of Health, defines complementary and alternative medicine as a "group of diverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine." Complementary medicine is used with conventional treatments, whereas alternative medicine is used instead of conventional medicine.
Although some may be effective, others aren't or can even be harmful. If you want to try complementary or alternative medicine, talk to your doctor about the pros and cons and what may be a good idea for you.

Alternative Treatments

Acupuncture is a procedure where a practitioner inserts very thin needles into specific points on your skin. Some scientists say that acupuncture triggers the release of the body's natural painkillers. Acupuncture has been shown to offer relief from chronic pain and is sometimes used by people with neuropathy, the painful nerve damage that can happen with diabetes.
Biofeedback is a technique that helps you become more aware of and learn to deal with your body's response to pain. This therapy emphasizes relaxation and stress-reduction techniques.
Guided imagery is a relaxation technique that some professionals who use biofeedback also practice. With guided imagery, you'll think of peaceful mental images, such as ocean waves, or perhaps images of controlling or curing your disease. People using this technique say these positive images can ease their condition.

Natural Dietary Supplements

The benefit of taking  chromiumhas been studied and debated for several years. You need the mineral to make glucose tolerance factor, which helps insulin work better. Several studies suggest that chromium supplements may improve diabetes control, but we don't have enough information to recommend it to treat diabetes yet.
Several types of plants are referred to as ginseng, but most studies have used American ginseng. They've shown some sugar-lowering effects in fasting and after-meal blood sugar levels, as well as in A1c results (average blood sugar levels over a 3-month period). But we need larger and more long-term studies. Researchers also found that the amount of sugar-lowering compound in ginseng plants varies widely.

Herbs for Mental Disorder

Many herbs have been used since ancient times, for the prevention and treatment of almost every disease known to man. They can either be encapsulated or taken in form of herbal teas. The good thing about herbal treatments is that they do not pose any serious threats to one’s health as they have minimal side effects.

Mulungu Bark

Mulungu bark is used in Central and South America for calming the nerves, improving the mood and aiding sleep. Mulungu contains erythravine, an active alkaloid which helps in anxiety reduction and protecting brain function. The flavanoids found in Mulungu are one of the best antioxidants and help in having a healthier brain. They are found to inhibit anxiety without any side effects and do not affect basic motor skills.
Another effect of Mulungu is the strong physical sensation of well being. It elevates the mood as well. It is known to be helpful with brain diseases like epilepsy, insomnia and anxiety. Studies have shown that all these diseases lead to major brain disorders and other brain degenerative diseases. Mulungu can be taken on its own or with a stimulant like green tea to amplify its effects. It gives mental clarity and improves brain function.

Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna has been used in ayurvedic medicine since 1500 B.C. and is also known as the velvet bean. Mucuna contains L.dopa which is a biochemical precursor to several neurotransmitters. Dopamine happens to be one of these neurotransmitters in addition to adrenaline and noradrenalin, and it supports improved brain function and increased memory. It also regulates the mood and cognition.
Mucuna is widely known as an anti aging herb. The antioxidant properties make it anti inflammatory and effective towards the protection of neurons. It protects brain function by keeping a check over cognitive and neural functions. Mucuna’s secret benefit is that it fights redness in the brain, which is one of the symptoms of brain degradation.

Passiflora Incarnata (Passion Flower)

Passion flower, also called apricot vine, was found in 1956 in Peru. Passion flower is used in herbal medicines to promote calmness and relaxation. It is also found to be very helpful in reducing anxiety. In synergy with other forms of treatment, it is found to be effective in reducing anxiety, irritability, insomnia and agitation. It also helps with a psychiatric disorder called adjustment disorder with anxious mood. Passion flower also helps with sleep disorders and seizures.
The best way to take passion flower is, as an herbal tea. According to the NYU Langone Medical Center, you should drink one cup of passion flower tea, three times a day.

Scutellaria Lateriflora (Skullcap)

A natural tranquilizer, Skullcap is an American perennial herb found from New York to Virginia and southwards to South Carolina, Alabama and Missouri. Skullcap is a very powerful medicinal herb. It is used in treatments of many nervous related disorders like epilepsy, hysteria, insomnia and anxiety. It is also used in the treatment of ADD and a number of other nervous disorders. It is anti inflammatory, antispasmodic, febrifuge, sedative and tonic in nature. It contains volatile oils, tannins and scutellarins that are very helpful in mental disorders. Research suggests it possesses mood enhancing properties and protects the brain against damaging effects caused by inflammation.
According to HerbsList, Skullcap eases muscle spasms, muscle twitching and may help in ailments that involve involuntary limb movement, such as Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy.

Piper Methysticum Kava

From the roots and stem of the piper methysticum plant, a non-alcoholic beverage is made. This herb is found in the islands of the South Pacific. It has been used since the early 90’s as the herbal medicine for stress and anxiety. It contains kava lactones which are responsible for its psychoactive qualities. They work in the brain to produce non narcotic action against anxiety. Kava is beneficial for anxiety and doesn’t affect heart rate or blood pressure.
Other disorders where Kava has been found beneficial are migraines, ADHD, psychosis, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Ginseng

Ginseng, also called Panax ginseng, and is a widely used herbal remedy, all over the world. Its health benefits have been known for over thousands of years. It is used as a tonic to balance, stimulate and relax the nervous system. It brings strength and wisdom.
Ginseng is an adaptogen. Adaptogens are known to make us more resilient to mental and physical stress. They reduce the stress hormone cortisol and increase the adrenal gland. Adaptogens can calm you down and boost your energy without over stimulation.
It has the same relaxing effect and increased alertness as experienced after green tea. It helps in getting better sleep, increased energy levels and greater personal satisfaction. It is also helpful with the treatment of depression by regulating serotonin, dopamine and noreprinephrine. It works as a brain booster and protector. It improves brain function and concentration. It helps with memory issues and protects against age related mental issues. Ginseng also works as an antioxidant and helps in protecting the brain cells against free radical damage.
Increasingly large numbers of people are suffering from brain diseases like Alzheimer’s and Dementia. A number of medicines are also available to help with the symptoms, but they are heavy on the pocket and come with many side effects. These herbs have been in use for hundreds of years and do not pose any health threats. Continuous use of these herbs will ensure a healthy brain, strong enough to fight away any disease.
